The paper investigates whether the current worldwide shift in the focus of Microfinance Institutions (MFls) toward commercialization or profitability is a natural evolutionary process or a result of donor pressure to achieve large-scale operations and financial sustainability. The paper analyzes two approaches (i.e. integrated approach and financial systems perspective) to microfinance commercialization and concludes that the desire for financial sustainability is largely driven by international donor pressure.
