With the transition from a one-party system of the second republic to the multi-party system of the third republic of Zambia, the local organisation of low-income peri-urban areas in Lusaka was deeply affected. On the basis of a series of studies in George compound during the last decades, this article begins by summarizing findings about local organization and political transition, and it continues by focusing on young women and men with the aim of exploring their experience of the political transition, and their views on the organization 01 their community. The youth have not been the actors in the transition. Still, their experiences are crucial for the development of democratic values and the future 01 the city.
