In the search for people-centred development strategies, the potential of grassroots production cooperatives in India’s agrarian economy has tended to be dismissed or underestimated due to a rejection of the possibility of collective action transcending individualistic strategies and the poor reputation rural cooperatives earned in India in the 1950s. Based upon research financed by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), this paper is an attempt to reassess that potential.
