There is an evident connection between colonial rule and the suppression of women in Latin America. The resulting male clichés like virgin saint versus whore,the all-embracing mother etc. have been addressed by contemporary authoresses and a new concept of femininity has emerged. This has been achieved by reclaiming the lost and by parodistically subverting the dominantly male literary discourse. Modern womens literature in Latin America is an attempt to overcome the Manichaean split and to achieve a new, unified image of women, yet taking into account social differencies between them.
