The comparative advantage of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the fields of environment and development is increasingly being acknowledged by the international community. The 1992 UNCED offers a unique opportunity for exploring the ways NGO complementarity can assist in tackling the problems of moving towards more sustainable lifestyles. This paper looks at how NGOs can contribute to the debate on sustainable development, what they can actually do to coordinate ways of achieving greater sustainability, and the potential for this within the UNCED process.
