An Ongoing Conquest – Confronting the Expansion of Capitalism in Indigenous Documentary Films

Abstract

This article explores the relation between indigenous filmmaking and conflict due to expanding extractive industries in Latin America, and the documentary film potential to create new understandings of these situations. It specifically engages with two indigenous documentaries that focus on current territorial conflicts and environmental injustice: Júba Wajiín – Resistencia en la Montaña de Guerrero (2018) and Sangre y Tierra (2016). The article argues that these films enable a confrontation with current global modes of production, by articulating the expansion of capitalism as a process of increasing destruction, as an ongoing conquest
