The article deals critically with three different concepts of development: (1) European growth and industrialization (2) Third World basic needs and (3) the global concept of sustainable development. (1) The assumptions of the growth model have proved wrong. (2) The basic needs concept is mainly rhetoric without politics. (3) Ecodevelopment is threatened by the oligarchic levels of consumption in Industrial countries or by an eco-dictatorship.
